Preliminary Announcement Regarding Major Filing Change for 2009 Form 5500The Department of Labor (DOL) appears to have stayed on track with expectations for conversion to electronic filing of form 5500 beginning January 1, 2010. We are still pursing the simplest, most efficient option for creating an e-file package of the necessary items that may be filed with the 5500. We want to make you aware that this requirement is on schedule and a paper filing will no longer be acceptable. The DOL is still refining filing options, however at this point, it appears that each signer on the form will be required to create a private pin to create an electronic signature. ACTION:Be aware that multiple signers in your organization will need to obtain separate pin numbers long before the filing deadline of July 31, 2010. Audits for large Plans MUST be attached to the filing – plans will no longer be able to file the 5500 and then file the auditor's report late. Large plans filed without the audit attachment will be rejected immediately. Watch for a subsequent announcement with more details as we obtain them.
